Clyde Zettle
CLYDE ZETTEL DIES MONDAY
Clyde L. Zettel, 81, well-known Gladwin businessman for 54 years, died Monday, Sept. 20 at
3:30 a.m. at the Gladwin Nursing Home where he had been a patient for a few weeks. He had been
in failing health for the past several months. Born in West Branch, September 1, 1895, he was
the son of Christian and Emma Zinger Zettel. A graduate of the West Branch schools, he studied
pharmacy at Ferris Institute and then served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
In February of 1922, Mr. Zettel came to Gladwin and purchased McDuff's Drug Store, renamed it
Zettel's Drug Store, and was active in its management until his semi retirement in the last few
years.
Mr. Zettel and the former Miss Helen Shipman were married October 3, 1922, in Jonesville, and
they became the parents of seven children. Mrs. Zettel died in 1966 and he married Mrs. Ruth Baer
on January 10, 1970, in Gladwin. He was a winter resident of Palmetto, Fla., the past several years.
Active in civic and community affairs, he served as mayor of Gladwin from 1936-38, and was a member
of the board of directors of Mid Michigan Bank. Mr. Zettel was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Council 5280 Knights of Columbus, Gladwin Rotary Club, World War I Barracks 3421 VFW, the
American Legion and Michigan and American Pharmaceutical Associations.
Survivors are 5 daughters, Mrs. Kellard (Jane) Bostick of Manton, Lucille Zettel of Pacifica,
Calif., Margaret Zettel of Lima, Peru, Mrs. Marvin (Mary) Simonson of Mt. Clemens, and Mrs. Russell
(Peggy) McKinney of Plymouth; one son, Charles Zettel of Gladwin; 16 grandchildren and 2 great
grandchildren; 2 step-sisters, Florence and Margaret Rau, both of Auburn Heights. a son, Richard,
preceded him in death in 1972 and a daughter Barbara in 1932.
Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Joseph
Castanier and Rev. Fr. George Artman officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A K. of C.
Rosary at 8:30 p.m. and a wake service at 9:00 p.m. will be held at Mathews Funeral Home. Wednesday
evening. The family requests that memorials be made to Gladwin Area Hospital or the the Cancer Society.
