Fay Yager
Beaverton Man Died After Fracas
Funeral Services Will Be Held Thursday Afternoon
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock for Fay A. Yager, 40, of
Beaverton, who died Sunday at the Midland hospital. Yager was admitted to the hospital Saturday
afternoon, nearly 18 hours after being involved in an altercation Friday evening on a Beaverton
street. Prosecutor Cyrus Y. Atlee said that according to statements made by witnesses, Yager
engaged in a prolonged argument at a Beaverton tavern with Archie Fackler, 43, of Gladwin. Fackler,
a member of Boman's Tavern shuffle-board team, had gone to Beaverton to play a match with the
Beaverton team. Yager was not a member of the Beaverton team but joined the group as an onlooker.
Witnesses told officers that during the verbal exchange, about a seat at a table, Yager invited
Fackler outside to settle te matter. During the brief fight in which blows were struck, Yager fell
and struck his head on the icy sidewalk, losing consciousness. Only a few persons were aware that
the argument had been carried on outside the tavern. He was taken to his home Friday night, but was
removed to the hospital when he failed to regain his senses.
Report of an autopsy conducted by Dr. L. J. Kassa, of Midland, revealed that Yager's death was
caused, by intra-cranial hemorrhages on both sides of the head, and a skull fracture on the left
side of the head. Mr. AtLee said this mornign that any coroner's inquest must be held in Midland
county by Midland authorities because the death occured there. AtLee also stated that Fackler was
not being held and that evidence, revealed so far, does not warrant the placing of charges by authorities.
Sheriff Arthur Kelly, Mr. AtLee and Coroner A. H. Bradley, of Midland, have been cooperating in
the investigation of the matter. Mr. Yager was born in December 20, 1910 in Cadillac, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Yager, and was a resident of Gladwin County about 30 years. On May 6, 1941 he married
Miss Helen Ruth Searfoss, of Gladwin. He was a veteran of World War II, serving nearly two years
overseas in the European theater, and a member of the VFW post. He was engaged in the contracting
business in Beaverton with his father and brothers.
Mr. Yager will be at the home of his parents until the time of the service at 2 o'clock on
Thursday afternoon. Services will be held at the Beaverton Church of the Brethren, with the Rev.
Ernest Jehnsen officiating. Burial will be made in the Dale cemetery, and wil be under the auspices
of the Beaverton Veterans of Foreign War Post.
