George W. Wise

Death Record --- G. W. Wise, An Old Pioneer
Gone---Hymenial---Miscellaneous Matters

Since my last three persons in this town have gone to try the realities of a continued existence---a little girl of James R. Dell, about one year old on the 25th ult., George W. Wise on the 28th, and Noah Westhouse on the 1st inst., the first from teething, the second from general prostration, the third crysipelas and disease of the heart. G. W. Wise was 54 years old, was the founder and first settler of this township, which was named after him, and the village from E. G. Loomis, his partner. Mr. W. was born in Clark county, Ohio, Dec. 8, 1825, worked principally at farming unitl 10 or 12 years ago, when he and E. G. Loomis bought a sawmill in Ohio and run it until the timber was used up in the vicinity, and then bought some pine land at this place, and being inexperienced, paid two or three times what it was worth, which always kept them behind in their business.
Mr. W. moved the machinery of the mill to this place (then called Buchtel) in March, 1871, the snow then being nearly three feet deep, built a mill and founded the future village of Loomis. He also soon built a mill three miles below here, known as Wise's little mill, which was burned in the spring of 1877. The two mills for sometime sawed from 4 to 6,000,000 feet of lumber a year, besides shingles, lath, pickets, fence posts, bed slats, etc. The mill at this place was burned in the summer of 1875, and at once rebuilt. He was elected a justice of the peace in 1875, which he held till his death. He did but little business in this capacity, and his decisions were always in accordance with law and justice.
His health had been failing for several months, if not years. He intended to go to Ohio, to die, but was not in a condition to do so. His remains were taken to Wadsworth, Ohio, for interment on the 30th ult. At the time of his death Mr. Wise was a member of the order of Knights of Honor, the Independent Order of Good Templars, had been a member of the M. E. church for many years, and died triumphing in the faith.
