Loyd Truckle

Loyd Robert Truckle of Gladwin, husband, father, grandfather and avid farmer, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 20, 2005. Loyd was born on May 26, 1927 in Saginaw to Elmer and Olive A. (Burton) Truckle. He joined the army at the age of 18. After serving as a certified mechanic in World War II, he returned home to farm and later married Delphine Wazny of Saginaw in 1949. In the late ‘40s Loyd was a boat racer for the Central Michigan Boating Association. He was a journeyman millwright at Saginaw Products for 18 years working on such projects as the Lunar Rover for NASA. In 1965, he and his family relocated to Gladwin. He farmed until his retirement in 1979. Loyd enjoyed camping in the Upper Peninsula and traveling around the United States.

He could often be seen walking around the campground with his crooked cane and his newest hat tilted gently to the side. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed hooking people into his stories as much as he did the fish he was discussing.

He was a prominent member of Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church. The children of the church often referred to him as the “Candyman,” for he always had a mint to give out to a waiting hand. Loyd partnered with State Representative Bill Sheltrown to champion a bill that would allow Michigan veterans to receive an honorary high school diploma. In 2001, after Sheltrown had pushed the bill through the Senate, Loyd was among the first recipients to receive his diploma. Loyd was not only a collector of memorable tales, but also of facts. He always had a clipping of a current event to discuss or an answer for Alex Trebek on Jeopardy.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Delphine; one brother, Jack (Margret) of Saginaw; five children, Janice (Larry) Wehner of Saginaw, Bernice (Terry) Eckley of Gladwin, Robert (Kelly) Truckle of Linwood, Gail (Eldon) Will of Eckerman, and Karen (Charles) Plank of Catawba, North Carolina; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25. The funeral will be held at Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church located at 3925 Round Lake Road north, of Gladwin. Burial will take place in Butman Township Cemetery. The VFW Post 7303 will take part in the grave side service. Memorials can be sent to the Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church building fund in lieu of flowers.
