James Townsend
James M. Townsend, 71, of Gladwin, died Thursday, March 6, at his home after
a long illness. Born in Tipton, Ind. July 22, 1914, he moved to Gladwin County in 1977 from
Farmington. Mr. Townsend was employed in supervision for General Motors. He was a veteran of
World War II and a member of the Allen Park F& AM Lodge 580. Mr. Townsend was married to the
former Bertella Jeffrey.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a step-son, Dan Whittere of Livonia; one step-daughter,
Mrs. John (Joyce) Bishop of Riverview; 5 sisters; one brother; and 6 step grandchildren. Rites
were held Sunday at 1 p.m. from the Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Carter Miller officiated
and burial was in the Grout Township Cemetery. A Masonic service was held Sunday by the Gladwin
F&AM Lodge 397.
