Mary Tobey

   Mary M. Tobey, 93, of Owosso, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at Ovid Healthcare Center. She had formerly resided in Kiwanis Village. She was born Feb. 11, 1912 in Hazelton Township, the daughter of Irving and Elsie (Batchlor) Vernon.

   She was a 1930 graduate of Vernon High School. On March 19, 1932 she married Ivan G. Tobey in Flushing. They farmed in Shiawassee County for 26 years and Gladwin County for 20 years until his retirement in 1974 when they moved to Owosso.

   Mrs. Tobey was a homemaker and a member of the Owosso Wesleyan Church. She had been affiliated with the Shiawassee Farm Bureau Women’ Club, Venice Extension, and Venice Kings Daughters. She was also a member of the St. Johns Arts Council and had been a 4-H leader for many years.

   Survivors include four daughters, Fay (Allan) Buecking of Flushing, Marilyn (LaVerne) Frederick of Macon, Georgia, Sharon (Edward) Chabica of LaGrangeville, New York, and Maxine (Gordon) Strahle of St. Johns; 15 grandchildren and 25 Great grandchildren; and one brother, Paul Vernon of Petoskey. She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan, on April 29, 1999; granddaughter, Susan Chabica; two sisters and five brothers.

   Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16 at the Owosso Wesleyan Church, with Pastor Wes Coffey and Rev. Douglas Vernon officiating. Burial took place at Greenwood Cemetery.

   Memorial contributions may be made to Hephzibah Children’s Home Memorial Flag, Bethlehem Stables, Macon, Georgia or Owosso Wesleyan Church.

   She will be remembered for her gracious and positive spirit. Special thanks to Ovid Healthcare Center for their loving care.
