Donald R. Thurston

   Donald R. Thurston, 77, of Hope, died early Friday morning, June 4, 2004, at his home from an apparent heart condition. He was born on May 2, 1927 in Grayling, son of the late Carl A. and Minnie (Marsh) Thurston. A longtime former resident, Don married Joann Cole on May 12, 1944 in Midland. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and had worked at the Dow Chemical Co. as a multi-craftsman for 37 years. He was a member of the Midland American Legion Berryhill Post No. 165, a life member of the Midland Masonic Lodge No. 273 F&AM, a member of the Elf Khurafeh Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. of Saginaw, and Midland Area Shrine Club. Don and Joann were also members of the Grand Square. He was a founding member of the Homer Township Fire Department. Don loved being with his family and friends.

   He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joann; children, Larry and Jeannett Thurston of Beaverton, Daryl and Donna Thurston of Cornell, Barry and Faye Thurston of Midland; one brother Gordon and Maynell Thurston of Midland; one sister Joyce Austin of Midland; seven grandchildren, Kenneth T. Thurston of Kingsford, Deborah Sebeck of Cornell, Dawn and Noel Harrison of Midland, Tonda and Chris Cole of Ruidoso, New Mexico, Matthew Schroeder of Atlana, Bryan Thurston, and Bart Thurston, Haleigh Harrison, Calya Harrison, Sarah Harrison, Darien Sebeck and Gary and Kaden Cole. In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by brothers Clifford, Carl and Leon Thurston, and sisters Irene Plummer, and Marian Laughton and one grandson Allan Thurston.

   Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, 2004, from the War-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. The Rev. Fred Becknell of the Midland Missionary Church will officiate with interment in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Don's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday 10 a.m. until time of service. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Full military honors will be presented by the Midland Area Veterans.
