GILBERT THOMAS
Gilbert E. Thomas, 72, of 4326 Hockaday Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Kokomo, Ind., on January 29, 1907, he came to Gladwin County in 1964. As a child he moved to Essex, Ontario, Can. and attended schools there. He then moved to Detroit where he taught at a flying school in 1928. Mr. Thomas moved to Winnipeg, Can., where he served as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Air Force from 1939 to 1941. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1946 and held the rank of major. Gene Autry flew under his command and was his co-pilot. After leaving the service he lived in Maybee until moving to Gladwin. Mr. Thomas was a member of the Gladwin County Farm Bureau.
Surviving are one brother, Kenneth of Gladwin; and one sister, Mrs. Harriette Day of Beaverton. One brother, Rowland, preceded him in death in 1949. Services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Helena Egts officiated and burial was in the Butman Cemetery. .
