Norman Smith
Norman A. (Boots) Smith, 68, of 702 N. Arcade St., Gladwin, died Saturday,
May 29, in the Clare Nursing Home. He had been in failing health since March. Born in Gladwin
on January 6, 1914, he graduated from Gladwin High School in 1933 and attended County Normal.
He taught school in Clare County for a year and then worked in Saginaw Steering Gear of 3 years.
Mr. Smith served in the South Pacific with the Army during World War II. Following service he
worked for Consumers Power in Midland until 1948 when he was employed by the Post Office in Gladwin.
He was a rural mail carrier until retiring in June 1972. Mr. Smith also drove school bus from 1963
to 1972.
He placed flags on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day for many years. Mr. Smith was a member
of the Gladwin United Methodist Church; life member and past member of the Gladwin Masonic Lodge 397
F & A.M. and secretary since 1960. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Royal Arch Masons of
Midland; the White Clover Chapter 84 OES; life member and past commander of both the DAV and VFW. He
was a life member of NRLCA and secretary of the Gladwin, Clare and Isabella County RLCA; past secretary
of both the Fellowship Club and Gladwin/Clare Scottist Rite Team; past president of the Community
Council; past president and players agent of the Gladwin Little League and a former scoutmaster with
the Boy Scouts. He and the former Doris Matzke were married July 19, 1952, in Saginaw.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Kathy) Cook of Gladwin and Deborah,
at home; one son, Richard of Ananoose, N.D.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Wilcox of Midland and Mrs. Isabelle
Anderson of Harper Woods; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Clarence, May 15,
1972 and Manville, February 29, 1974.
Services were held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Bates
officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery. A Masonic Memorial Service was held Tuesday at 7 p.m.
