Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
 
Lawrence Smith

   Lawrence Duane Smith was born May 17, 1936 in Midland, Michigan to Chloris (Miller) Smith and Leroy Benson Smith and died April 16, 2006.

   He graduated from Harrison Community Schools in 1955 after an outstanding athletic career on Harrison’s first football team as well as its baseball team.

   Larry served two years in the U.S. Army and retired from Dow Chemical Co. after 29 years. Larry married Anne MacArthur on June 30, 1958.

   He leaves his wife Anne; son Mark and grandson Drew of Houghton Lake, daughter Denise Robbins and husband Jim, and granddaughter Katy and grandson Bryant of Midland, and daughter Tracey and husband John Merillat and granddaughters Maggie and Molly of Clare. Also surviving him are his mother "Corky", his sister Barbara Knoertzer and husband Willie of Gladwin, brother, Bill and Wife Connie of Harrison, and sister-in-law Barbara Smith of Gaylord along with many beloved nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

   He was preceded in death by his father Roy; sister, Connie Juneac; and brother, Ken, as well as nephews Kerry and Tim Knoertzer and niece Angie Smith.

   He leaves a great legacy of love and will long be remembered for his gift of humor, his abiding faithfulness to his family and friends, his zest for life, his ability to enjoy every day and his enjoyment of his surroundings. St. Augustine said, "The key to immortality is first to live a life worth remembering.”

   In lieu of flowers the family requests that you remember him by donating to "The Larry Smith Scholarship Fund" c/o Jim Cooper, Harrison High School, 700 S. 5th St., Harrison, MI 48625 or giving your memorial to Stephanie Cooper at Chemical Bank on North 1st Street, Harrison, MI.

   Memorial services will be held on May 10, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from Stocking Funeral Home, Harrison with visitation from 12-2 p.m.
