Hugh R. Smith
Hugh R. Smith, 78, of 319 West Brown, Beaverton, died Tuesday, Jan. 11,
in the Midland Hospital following an illness of two weeks. Born in Tobacco Township on August
6, 1898, he had spent his lifetime in Gladwin County. A veteran of World War I, he was a member
of the Beaverton F. & A.M. Lodge No. 453, the Gladwin County V.F.W. Post No. 7303 and the
Disabled American Veterans. He worked for Dow Chemical Co. and was a heating contractor and
also worked in sheet metal construction.
Mr. Smith and the former Erma P. Snyder were married on August 7, 1920, in Gladwin. Besides
his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Charles (Ladena) Kercher of Linwood, and Mrs.
Richard (Sharie) Ewald of Mattawan; 3 sons, Hugh (Bud) of Lakeview, Charles of Beaverton and Tom
of Sanford; 2 sisters, Mrs. Norma Loveless of Bradenton, Fla. and Mrs. Arlee Loveless of Gladwin;
13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev.
Vernon Wyllys officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery. A Masonic Memorial Service was held
Thursday night at 8 p.m.
