Catherine Schlafley

   Catherine (Wegner) Schlafley, 95, of Midland died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006 at The Brook in Gladwin.

   The daughter of the late Henry and Amelia (Roth) Wegner was born in Susannental, Russia on Aug.12, 1911. Catherine moved to Montana as a youth, and later to Midland.

   On Sept. 9, 1934 she married Robert Schlafley in Clare; he predeceased her on Oct. 7, 2004. Together they owned and operated the Schlafley IGA Grocery Store in Midland for many years. After retirement they resided in Pt. Charlotte, Florida until returning to the Midland area.

   She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and enjoyed knitting, sewing and needlework.

   Catherine’s family would like to offer a special thank you to The Brook of Gladwin and to Hospice of Helping Hands of West Branch for the loving and exceptional care that they provided.

   Catherine is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Lee) Wilford of Gladwin; grandchildren, Kathleen Lay and Lee (Tracy) Wilford; and greatgrandchildren, Austin and Travis Wilford. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Bensch of Midland and Dorothy Neumeyer of Rhodes. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by brothers, Henry Wegner, Edward Wegner and Karl Wegner; and sisters, Emily Carrigan, Pauline Wegner, Rose Beyer, Elizabeth Dunham and Bertha Laczko.

   Memorial funeral service were conducted on Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Midland, with the Rev. John C. Pohanka and Dr. Douglas K. Janetzke officiating. Interment was in Midland City Cemetery.

   Memorials may be offered to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to Hospice of Helping hands of West Branch.

   Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Wilson Miller Funeral Home of Midland.
