George Punches
George Louis Punches went to be with his Savior on March 30, 2006. George was born on Feb. 28,1912, in Montcalm County, the son of Erwin and Ida (Corl) Punches. The family moved to Saginaw in 1918, he graduated from Arthur Hill Trade School and attended GM School of Technology in Flint. He married Dorothy E. Hoffmann April 26, 1931. George was a Project Engineer for General Motors and retired from the Saginaw Steering Gear in 1972 after 38 years of service.
After retirement he went to work for Amigo of Bridgeport as a Consultant Engineer. He then joined his wife in an antique business called, Butternut Place Antiques. George was active in community service: Highland Park School Board - now part of Buena Vista School System, Junior Board of Commerce of Saginaw, and the Bridgeport Planning Commission and was instrumental in forming the Charter Township for Bridgeport.
He was a former member of the American Society of Automotive Engineers, Saginaw Boy Scout Council and an active member and president of the Bridgeport Lions Club and Clare, Lions Club for a total of 38 years.
He was baptized and confirmed in Grace Lutheran Church of Saginaw. His life was devoted to church work, and he enjoyed supporting many of the church activities. Later, he was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. After moving to Clare in 1994, he was active in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, of 74 years, also two daughters, Joan and husband, Louis, Dulac of Gladwin and Carole and husband, William, Morgan of Markleville, California; and one son, George and wife, Margaret, Punches of Manistee; nine grandchildren; 19 Great-grandchildren; and one Greatgreat- grandchild. Special friends, Carol and Allen Maciag of Bridgeport, also many nieces and nephews and friends. He was predeceased by two sisters, Hazel Punches Brooker and Clara Punches McKendree.
Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clare on April 5, 2006 at noon. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Memorials may be sent to Prince of Peace Church Memorial Fund or the Saginaw Rescue Mission.
