William Priest
AT A RIPE AGE IS CALLED TO HIS LONG HOME
William Pries died at his home in Grout, May 19,
1911, aged 86 years, 1 month and 3 days, death
resulting from diseases incident to old age. Mr.
Priest was born in Licking county, Ohio, April 16,
1825, living in that state until nine years ago, when
he moved from Paulding to Grout township, Gladwin
county, where he has since resided. He was married in
1853 to Hannah Tucker, in Kenton, Ohio. To the union
eight children were born, five of whom are living,
viz.: Mrs. Atwood and Sylvester Priest, Beaverton;
Mrs. Coates, Jennings; Mrs. Mary Bingham and Mrs.
Wright, Grout; besides 17 grandchildren, 13 great
grandchildren, and his aged companion. Of a family of
16 he also has one brother living. Mr. Priest had
followed farming as a life occupation. He served in
Co. I, 68th Ohio volunteers. For 35 years he had been
a member of the United Brethren church.
Funeral was held from his home at 1 p.m. and from
Grout school-house at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Rev. Betts of
Gladwin officiating. He was a man of sturdy
constitution, excellent habits and fine moral
character. He continued to be active in his accustomed
pursuits until long past the age at which men
ordinarily drop out of the ranks of the workers. He
was a good neighbor and there was no happier family
circle than his. His best monument will be the good
report that he left behind him in the community in
which he lived.
Weep not that his toil is over,
Weep not that his race is run,
God grant we may rest as sweetly,
When, like his, our work is done.
Call me not dead,
Farewell friends, yet not farewell,
Where I go you too shall dwell.
I am gone before your face,
A moment's worth, a little space,
When you come where I have slept,
We will wonder why ye wept:
Ye will know by true love taught,
That here's all and there is naught.
Weep awhile if ye are fain,
Sunshine sitll must follow rain.
