Nelson Plude
Nelson Plude, who departed this life Sept.
20, at his home in Grout township, was one of the
first settlers of the county. He moved from Detroit to
this county 41 years ago, and two years later brought
and cleared the farm upon which he resided up to the
time of his death.
Mr. Plude saw Gladwin county transformed from a
lumbering region to a fine agricultural community, and
was one to bear the brunt of hardships of pioneer life
when the outlook was not so bright as now for the
future of the county. He witnessed the coming of the
railroad and all modern conveniences with which the
age is favored, and from the forest hewed out a good
home for his later years.
He was born May 6, 1844, in Canada, and lived to
the advanced age of 71 years, 4 months and 14 days.
His wife and nine children survive him, also two
sisters, Mrs.Page of Ludington and Mrs. Bertrand of
Bay City. Mr. Plude served his country in the Civil
war, and was prominent in G.A.R. gatherings. Funeral
services were held at the church of Sacred Heart.
Interment in Highland cemetery.
