William J. Parker
FORMER SHERIFF OF GLADWIN PASSES AWAY IN DETROIT
BROUGHT TO GLADWIN FOR BURIAL
William J. Parker, who was sheriff of Gladwin
county in 1883-4, died in Detroit, Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
and the body was brought to Gladwin Tuesday for
burial. Funeral services were held at the Free
Methodist church yesterday, Rev. William Rumley
officiating. Burial took place in Highland cemetery.
Mr. Parker was born in southern Illinois Feb. 7, 1847,
and died at the home of his son, 544 Michigan avenue
Detroit, aged 69 years, 5 months and 9 days. When a
boy he moved to Hocking Valley, Ohio, and from there
came to Gladwin county with his mother, some 40 years
ago. After living here a number of years he made his
home in other parts of the state. He served in the
Civil war as private in Co. F; 172 regiment, Ohio
infantry.
While in Gladwin in addition to sheriff he served
as under sheriff and village marshal, in the early
days when times were a little "wild and woolly," and
made a fine record as a peace officer, in which he was
a terror to evil doers. He was married in Gladwin
while sheriff, but his first wife died 12 years ago,
and he was again united in marriage, his second wife
surviving, at South Branch, Ogemaw county; also seven
children, Robert, Charles, Leonard and Ellen Parker,
Mrs. John M. Coleman, and Mrs. Henry Kuhn of Detroit,
and Mrs. Charles French of Olivet; one brother, John
R. Parker of Jacksonville; Ohio; and sisters, Mrs.
Allen Gifford, of Sage township; Mrs. John Waers of
Clare county, and Mrs. James T. Flemming of Battle
Creek, Ohio.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parker and Leonard Parker
accompanied the body to Gladwin for burial.
