Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
 
Lawrence Owens

   Lawrence Owens of Port Richey, Florida and Beaverton, Michigan passed away peacefully Saturday, April 26, 2008 in Port Richey, Florida.

   Born March 8, 1925 on a farm just north of Midland, he grew up in Hope, where his parents, George and Anna (Mason) Owens, ran the Hope General Store.

   After graduating from Beaverton High School in 1943, he worked as a carpenter for Shepard Brothers, then for 33 years as a machinist for Dow Chemical.

   He married Joan Duel in 1946 and convinced her to leave Midland for a farm in Beaverton, where they raised eight children. Dad was a Grand Knight in the Gladwin Council of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Edenville. In the 1970s, he was elected to the Beaverton School Board and, in the 1980s, was the Tobacco Township Supervisor.

   After retiring, Dad spent the summers in Beaverton and winters in New Port Richey, Florida, where he was an active member with the Knights of Columbus in Port Richey and served as a Eucharistic minister for St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He also enjoyed golf, bowling and photography.

   He is survived by his wife, Anne of Port Richey, Florida; eight children and two step-children, Nancy Humphrey (Jim), Edward Owens (Peg), Connie Loar (Terry), Rick Owens (Robyn), Robert Owens (Debra), Sally Fisher, Janice Owens, Hugh Owens, Joseph Gravante (Denise) and Linda Moran (Thomas); 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Julia Misko, Mary Hammond, Bill Owens and Michael (Wilma) Owens.

   He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan; sisters, Alice McDowell and Catherine Rowland; and brother, John Owens.

   Mass will be held at St. Anne’s in Edenville on Friday, May 2 at 11 a.m.

   Pat’s family will receive friends at Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton on Thursday, May 1 from 2-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
