Samuel Oaks

   Samuel H. Oaks, 71, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at the West Branch Regional Medical Center in West Branch. He was born Jan. 15, 1935 to Levi and Florence Oaks.

   Samuel has been a resident of Alger since 1981, being formerly of Lake Orion.

   He retired from General Motors after 32 years, and was a member of the UAW local # 653.

   Sam was a life member of the NRA and the Michigan Bow Hunters Association. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Clement Fire Association for 12 years serving two terms as fire chief. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman and a master gardener. He also loved to cook, tell stories and was a great tigers fan.

   Sam is survived by his wife of 42 years Janet Oaks of Alger, seven children Bonita (Jim) Mattson of Alger, Gary Oaks of West Virginia, Nancy (Jim) Hulett of Ortonville, Rick Jones-Oaks of Alger, Tim (Debbie) Oaks of Fenton, Kimberly (John) Muenz of North Branch, and Sam (Melissa) Oaks Jr. of Omer; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven brothers and sisters, Mary Taulbee, John (Edna) Oaks, Levi (Jinny) Oaks Jr., Golden (Bob) Moore, Helen (Bill) Atkins, Charles (Marlene) Oaks, and Eudell (Carl) Johnson. He is preceded in death by his parents Levi and Florence and brothers and sisters Gladys Shouse, Thelma Jean Oaks, Ray Oaks, James Edward Oaks and Willard Oaks.

   A funeral for Sam was Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006 at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch. Pastor John Scott officiated. Burial was at the Edwards Township Cemetery.

   Memorial Contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
