Eileen Navarro

Eileen Navarro, 89, died Dec. 22, 2005. She was born Sept. 3, 1916 in Gladwin to Norman and Ida (Wesley) Bergey. The family included an older sister, Viola Marian, brother Wesley Christian, and younger sister, Mary Elizabeth. Eileen reflected often about her Papa and Mama and growing up in Gladwin, surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins. She loved talking about growing up in Gladwin and Winn and felt her childhood was very special.

She graduated from Gladwin High School in 1934 and moved to Saginaw where she met and married her first husband, Franklin S. Young on Oct. 10, 1936 in Saginaw. Frank and Eileen had three daughters, Norma Jean, Barbara Eileen, and Betty Lou.

The marriage between Eileen and Frank was a shaky one and those three daughters were thankful when the couple divorced after 15 years of marriage in the early 1950s. Happily, her second marriage to Joseph A. Navarro was a success. Joe and Eileen married Dec. 11, 1953. They were a devoted couple as they enjoyed winters in Florida, summers in Michigan, and just being with each other until Joe’s death in Nov. 1986 at the age of 79. The marriage lasted 33 years, not nearly long enough as far as Eileen was concerned, and in fact she could be quite annoyed with her own longevity. (She had to be reminded that life events don’t happen in our time, but in God’s time.)

Surviving Eileen is her younger sister, Mary Cottrill of Plainwell; three first cousins, Dale Bergey of Ontario, Alma (Hutson) Hayward and Gordon Hutson of Gladwin; two nieces, Ann (Segar) Beck of Gladwin and Patricia (Cottrill) Flower of Plainwell; two nephews, Dick Segar, West Branch and Doug Cottrill of Plainwell; three daughters, Norma Valley of New Hampshire, Barbara Jacobs of Florida, and Mrs. Betty James of Cross; and 10 grandchildren, 16 Great-grandchildren and two Great-great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved and will be missed by many. A celebration was held April 22 to celebrate the life this special woman who was mom, sister, cousin, grandmother, aunt and friend. Ephesians 3:14-16 - “When I think of the wisdom and scope of God’s plan, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious unlimited resources he will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit.”
