Phil S. Matthews Sr

Has Passed Beyond Old-Time Resident of Gladwin—Was Postmaster, Merchant and Hotel Keeper. Phil S. Matthews, one time resident of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, at his home at Elsie, Clinton county, in his 74th year. Mr. Matthews was born in Durham, Ont., and came to Midland in 1872, where he worked at the printer's trade several years, then took up painting and carpenter work, the family trades, being a fine workman. In 1883 he established a drug store in Gladwin, located in the small buliding, now burned, first occupied by C. C. Fouch as a store, and last by D. Mills. Later he was engaged in clothing business and served as the fourth postmaster at Gladwin, succeeding P. H. Moore, having postoffice and store in a building east of Henderson's store, now burned, and later in a building now occupied by Knight's meat market. He then bought the Central Hotel, built by J. A. Wright on the present site of the Ford garage, and rebuilt the same, and after a fire again rebuilt it. The hotel enjoyed a fine business under management of Mr. and Mrs. Matthews. After selling the hotel they went to Idaho and engaged in mercantile business, remaining for some years, and during the last few years they have had a store business at Elsie. Mr. Matthews was married a second time, after death of his first wife, and is survived by his wife, a sister of Mrs. Edna Berry of Gladwin and two sons, Philip of Bay City and Jesse of Idaho. Burial took place at Elsie.
