Ronald Matestic
Retired Air Force Colonel Ronald E. Matestic passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 2, 2005. He was born Jan. 7, 1943 in Detroit. He received his Bachelor of Science from the Michigan Technological University in 1966 and graduated from pilot training at Laughlin AFB, Texas in 1967. He graduated with distinction from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1976 with a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. Some highlights of his career include Squadron Commander of the 41st Tactical Airlift Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina from 1982-85; Base Civil Engineer at McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, Washington from 1985-88; and he led an effort with NATO to relocate a tactical fighter wing from Torrejon Air Base in Spain to Crotone, Italy where he was stationed for two years. He retired from military service in 1990 and settled in Lakewood, Washington. An accomplished athlete, engineer, and pilot, Ron was dedicated to both his career and his love of gardening, home improvement, fishing, hiking, and croquet. He possessed an uncanny understanding of science and mechanics and will always be remembered for his great intelligence, wit, and love of the outdoors. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his mother, Lottie; his wife, Kathy; his children, Pattie and Ron, their mother Rose Marie; and his brothers, Leonard and Gerry.
A funeral service was held on Dec. 10, 2005 at Garden Chapel, Mountain View Funeral Home in Tacoma, Washington, with Father Lee Hightower officiating. Military Honors were presented at the closing of the memorial service. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington on May 5, 2006.
