We were soldiers once – and young. All different, from places so far flung. We were thrown together not by choice – but by politicians, our so called voice.

This war was theirs – but came to us – like an unexpected saber’s thrust. We killed and died – what a terrible shame. And on our shoulders they lay the blame.

Black, white and brown – we wore this crown – we’ve worn it through our own home town. But we alone know in our hearts – we had no choice but to play our parts.

Together we stood – as one we fell, but we loved each other through this bloody hell.

Some thought us smart – some thought us dunce, but one and all we were soldiers once and young.

   By Bill Magda 1994.
