Gladwin Man Killed In Crash Sunday Morning

A 62 year-old Gladwin man was killed about 6:45 a.m. Sunday morning in a crash on M-18, south of Howard Road. Dead at the scene was Willi Laycock, of Sage Township. He was driving his pickup to work at Brown Machine in Beaverton where he was a plant protection employee, when the fatal accident occurred, Gladwin Undersheriff Walter Scott said.

Laycock's truck was apparently struck in the rear by a car operated by Gary L. Yeager, of Flint. Yeager was treated at the Gladwin Hospital for a chest injury, facial cuts and an injured jaw and released, hospital authorities said. The force of the collison sent Yeager's car down the east side of the highway and into the ditch. The pickup was hurtled to the west side of the road where it is believed to have flipped, Scott said.

Laycock was thrown out of the truck on the shoulder of the highway. County Coroner Donald Hall said he died of a fractured skull. Mr. Laycock was born in Gladwin on June 26, 1905. He was a farmer and also employed by the Pinkerton Security Force and Plant Protection Agency. Mr. Laycock was married to the former Thelma Wilson on June 23, 1945, in Gladwin.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, John, at home; two brothers, Clarence of Gladwin and Harold of Kansas City, Mo.; and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Cardwell of Midland.

Services were held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, from the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. John W. Cermak officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery.
