George A. Kingsbury
ONE OF THE FIRST RESIDENTS OF GLADWIN IS LAID TO REST.
George A. Kingsbury died the night of Feb. 24 in
this city at the home of Guy E. Smith, where he had
lived several years. He was born in New York state
Feb. 12, 1827 and was aged 86 years and 12 days. Mr.
Kingsbury came to Gladwin county some 35 years ago,
and he was a familiar figure to old residents. He
home-steaded the farm now owned by James Riley, and
was the first settler in the neighborhood of Round
Lake. In his early days he was a man of strong
physical powers and a hard worker, his sturdy
constitution enabling him to actively continue his
accustomed pursuits until long past the usual age at
which ordinary men drop out of the ranks.
His declining years were enjoyed quitely and
peacefully and the stern Reaper found him "as a shock
of corn fully ripe for the harvest." Mr. Kingsbury
exemplified the teachings of the golden rule, and
found consolation in his devotion to a Christian life.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Episcopal
church at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. J. H. Nimmo.
