Mary Ann (Conkey) Kerswill
Another Gladwin Pioneer Passes Mrs. G. S. Kerswill
Mary Ann Conkey, daughter of William and Mary Gourley Conkey, was born at
Adelaide, Ontario, November 12, 1850, and passed away at ther late home in Gladwin, Michigan
April 22, 1933. She had been suffering from an illness that extended over two years.
About 40 years ago, with her husband and children, she came to Michigan and on farm which
they pioneered she has since lived. These lands were covered with forests in those days and
in coming from a well settled and prosperous territory in Canada to the loneliness of a
sparsely populated section in a strange country required the courage of the pioneer. Out of
this they built one of the fine farm homes of this section.
It was in November, 1884, that she was united in marriage to G. S. Kerswill in Adelaide.
Three children were born to them, one of which died in infancy.
Mrs. Kerswill was affiliated with the Presbyterian church in Canada, but finding no church of that denomination in this community when she came to Michigan, she united with the Methodist Episcopal church at West Grout and has been a faithful member, being regularly in attendance at its services until physically incapacitated.
Those left to mourn their loss at her passing are one sister, Mrs. Alice Kerswell of Toronto; three brothers, Thomas Conkey of Kansas City, Missouri, Philip and Darius Conkey of Strathroy; her husband who has faithfully and tenderly ministered to her during her illness; two sons, Harry G. and Lyman Kerswill, of Gladwin. She leaes also two grandsons and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the home and the West Grout Methodist Episcopal church Tuesday, April 25, at two o-clock. Rev. Leroy M. Whitney, pastor of the church officiated. The music for the service was furnished by the church choir singing "Abide with Me," "Some Day 'Twill All be Over" and "Some One Will Enter the Pearly Gate". Br>
Out of town relatives who were able to be here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Darius Conkey of Strathroy, Ontario, and Mr. and Mrs. McNair Kerswell of Lexington, Kentucky. |
