JOSEPH HUNTER


  Joseph L. Hunter, 83, well-known Beaverton resident and retired rural carrier, died Monday, Nov. 12, in Gratiot Community Hospital, Alma, following a long illness. Born in Chesaning on January 21, 1896, he came to Gladwin County in 1922 from Coleman. A veteran of World War I, he was wounded during the battle of Juvigny Plateau and after recovering from his injuries was discharged in 1919. He attended business school under the Veteran's Rehabilitation Act and was sent to Coleman for pratical training in railroad station accounting. Mr. Hunter then came to Beaverton as a station agent operator for the Pere Marquette Railway where he remained for eight years.

  He became a rural mail carrier at Beaverton in 1938 and retired September 30, 1957. Mr. Hunter joined the Masonic Order in 1922 and served the Beaverton Lodge No. 453 as Worshipful Master in 1928, 1929, 1932, 1935 and 1978. He was named Grand Master of Michigan in 1958, 59. Following his term as Grand Master, he became the Grand Lecturer for the state organization. In 1961, Mr. Hunter was invited to become a 33rd degree Mason in the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite.

  He became a member of the old county Board of Supervisors in 1964 and served as chairman pro tem in 1965. He was named chairman of the board in 1966, Mr. Hunter retired from the board in 1967. He served on the board of directors of the Masonic Home in Alma for many years and was a member of the Beaverton Presbyterian Church. Mr. Hunter served the City of Beaverton as an alderman, city treasurer and finally as mayor. He was also a past commander of the American Legion Post. He and the former Sylvia Bates were married July 2, 1938, in Saginaw.

  Besides his wife, he is survived by one sister, Effa J. Hunter of Beaverton. Services were held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. Harold Prong officiated and burial was in the Beaverton Cemetery. A Masonic Memorial Service was held Tuesday at 8:30 p.m..
