Lawrence W. Hughes
Lawrence (Larry) W. Hughes Jr., 61, of Detroit and formerly of Beaverton,
died Thursday evening, Feb. 12, 1987. He was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Beaverton and was a Detroit
policeman for 14 years. He married the former Etta Jean Elzay in Beaverton. While serving in the
United States Air Force during World War II, he was shot down and was missing in action for a
period of time. He was active in V.F.W. organizations in Detroit, and was an avid sportsman and
hunter.
He leaves his wife, Etta Jean; a son, Patrick Hughes of Detroit; a daughter, Carolyn Hughes
of Detroit; brothers Robert Hughes of Beaverton, Theodore Hughes of Florida, Gerald Hughes of
Goodrich, Maynard of Midland, James of Lansing and John D. Hughes of Gaylord; a sister, Harriet
Thurston of Midland; and one granddaughter. Military services will be held at 11 a.m. today at
Sagewski Funeral Home, Detroit, Cremation will follow. Friends may call from 10 a.m. today until
time of service.
