Etta Hughes

   Etta Jean Hughes, 76, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008 at Tendercare of Traverse City.

   Etta was born Jan. 27, 1932 in Beaverton the daughter of Curt and Fannie (Salyer) Elzay. Etta was raised by her Uncle Earl and Aunt Ann Elzay after her mother’s death.On April 27, 1950 in Beaverton she married her loving husband of thirty seven years, Lawrence Hughes who died in Feb 1987.

   Etta and Lawrence raised their children in Detroit. She and Lawrence were active in the VFW and American Legion. Etta was fun-loving and had a great sense of humor, as well as a beautiful singing voice. She loved sharing music and song with her many friends. Etta treasured spending as much time with her grandchildren. Her loved ones will greatly miss the sound of her laughter.

   Etta is survived by her daughter Carolyn (Bill Ayers) Hughes; a son, Patrick (Helen) Hughes; five grandchildren, Kyler and Austin Hughes, Jena, Rachel and Mitchel Hughes; several brothers, sisters-in-law and great friends from Beaverton and Detroit. She was preceded in death by her parents, and Uncle Earl and Aunt Ann Elzay. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Beaverton. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, Beaverton.

   Memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Rd. and/or NW MI Alzheimer’s Association, 1040 Walnut St., both in Traverse City, MI 49686.
