Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
 
Mathias Huber

   Mathias Duane Huber, 90, of Gladwin, passed on to his eternal home on Thursday, March 10, 2005 at the Brook Assisted Living Center, West Branch surrounded by his wife and children.

   He was born in Gladwin’s Grout Township on April 15, 1914 to the late Mathias and Maude (Swinehart) Huber. He married the love of his life, the former Nellie Hillier, in Clio on June 18, 1938; she survives him.

   Duane resided in Gladwin all of his life except for three years the family lived in Tampa, Florida. He worked for the family owned Huber’s Dairy, owned his own dairy farm in Grout Township, drove the county ambulance for Hillsborough County in Florida, and retired from Linaberry Products of Gladwin in 1976. He had the distinction of being the oldest retired volunteer firefighter in Gladwin. He was affectionately known for his sense of humor, love of life and was the creator and engineer of PaPa’s Choo Choo.

   Family was very important to Duane and he adored his grandchildren and Great grandchildren. He was a faithful servant of the Lord, of his church and of his community. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men and served as head usher for many years. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

   Surviving besides his wife Nellie are two sons, Robert (Joanne) Huber of Land O’Lakes, Florida, and Michael (Sue) Huber of Burt; two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Kinne of Tuckahoe, New Jersey, and Janis (Dennis) Shea of Gladwin; and a special “son,” Wolfgang Schott of Germany; nine grandchildren, 16 Great grandchildren and several step grandchildren and step Great grandchildren; one brother, Don (Mary) Huber of Gladwin; seven sisters, Edith Hamilton of Gladwin, Wanda Tarrant of Montrose, Eunice (Richard) List of Bay City, Ruth Otterback of Columbia, South Carolina, and Maysell Redman, Maxine (Kenneth) Young, and Pat (Richard) Priemer, all of Gladwin. He was predeceased by one brother, Ovid Huber, and one sister, Lorraine Flynn.

   Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 13 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Chappell and Pastor Mat Shea presiding. Burial took place in Highland Cemetery. The funeral procession was escorted by PaPa’s Choo Choo.

   Memorials may be made out to First United Methodist Church, Hospice of Gladwin, Mid-Michigan Hospice or the New Heart Church of the Nazarene.

   Arrangements were handled by Sisson Funeral Home.
