Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
Joal Horton
Joel Michael Horton, age 24, died at his parentís home on Dec. 28, 2007.

   Joel was born in Midland on Jan. 16, 1983. He attended Siebert Elementary, Jefferson Intermediate and Dow High School. Joel spent time in the US Navy where he earned a high school diploma. Joel worked most recently as a pipe fitter apprentice at Three Riverís Construction.

   As a child Joel enjoyed sports and played in the Midland Soccer League and Larkin Baseball Association for several years. Joel was also a successful deer hunter, with both bow and arrow, and rifle. He enjoyed Nascar racing, canoeing, nature and animals.

   Joel loved his family; fiance Kari and her daughter Sadee, to whom Joel was an excellent father; and his yellow Labrador, Beretta.

   Joel struggled with depression and substance abuse addiction for several years. The depth of his pain became unbearable and he felt there was no other solution. Joelís pain affected those who loved him, watched him suffer and tried to get him help.

   Joel is survived by his parents, James and Jackie (McLatchie) Horton of Midland; fiance, Kari Wright and her daughter Sadee of Midland; grandparents, Kenneth and Barbara Horton of Gladwin; uncles and aunts, Bill and Donna Horton, LaVerne and Kim Good of Gladwin, Greg and Jan Doan of Bay City, and Linda Doan of Kawkawlin; cousins, Ben Doan of Bay City, Amy Horton and Bob Horton of Gladwin, Eric Good of Lowell, and Stacy Nesbitt of South Carolina. Joel was predeceased by his brother, Nicholas Horton; grandmother, Gladys Burch; and grandfather, John McLatchie.

   A memorial service was held Jan. 2 at the Ware-Smith Woolever Funeral Home in Midland.
