Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
Arthur Hetherington

   Arthur M. Hetherington, 73, of Corvallis, Oregon passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at his home after an eight-year battle with cancer.

   He was born Aug. 3, 1934 in Gladwin, Michigan to Arthur Hetherington and Mary (Armstrong) Hetherington. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957 and was honorably discharged as Airman 2nd Class. He moved to California shortly thereafter where he met and married Elizabeth Redmond Oct. 5, 1963.

   He graduated from California State University at Long Beach with a masters degree in vocational education. He worked as an engineer for several defense industry companies including Garrett Air Research, Northrup, TRW and Rockwell.

   Upon his retirement, he took up playing in several senior softball leagues and won against Canada in the World Champion Softball League in 1997.

   One of his last wishes was to make a final trip to Gladwin with his brother Patrick in 2007. He spent a week visiting his family, friends and old farm house.

   Arthur is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth (Redmond) Hetherington of Corvallis, Oregon; one son, Martin (Susan) Hetherington of Corvallis, Oregon; two precious grandchildren, Jillian and Patrick; two sisters, Betty Browne of Mesa, Arizona and Mary Lennon of Littleton, Colorado; three brothers, Max Hetherington of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Don Hetherington of Gladwin and Patrick Hetherington of Thousand Oaks, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Leona Shelton and Marilyn Bastian.

   Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albany, Oregon. He was laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Corvallis, Oregon. Memorial contributions can be made to City of Hope cancer research and medical center in Duarte, California.
