Mary Elizabeth Hanna
Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs'. William J. Hanna, died Wednesday, March 14, 1923, at Mercy hospital, Bay City, of appendicitis, having been operated on Friday, March 9.
She was born January 31, 1904, at their farm in Grout township, where she spent her early childhood days. She attended Grout district school No. 6, until she graduated from the eighth grade when she entered the Gladwin high school, from which she graduated in June, 1922. She attended the summer session of the Central State Normal and in the fall began teaching in one of the district schools of Bentley township. She had just returned to her school that week after recovering from an attack of influenza, was taken sick Wednesday, but continued to teach that day and Thursday, when she returned home. Friday morning she was taken by her father to Mercy hospital, Bay City, where she was operated on that day and died the following Wednesday.
The body was brought to Gladwin Thursday morning and taken to the home.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a member, having joined April 10, 1921, conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. T. Smith, followed by burial in Highland cemetery. The pallbearers were six young ladies chosen from her classmates. The county teachers, who held their annual meeting at Gladwin that day, attended in a body and the high regard in which the deceased was held was attested by the large number in attendance at the funeral, Crowding the church to the doors. There were many beautiful floral Tributes.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Hanna, her sister, Miss Esther Hanna, grandparents, Mrs. Clara Mills, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Page, uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs, George Hanna, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Page, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Most, Mr. and Mrs. Justis Thorington and Lloyd Page, and many cousins.
