Gleason Halliwill
Gleason E. Halliwill, 60, of 1100 Ritchie Rd., Gladwin, died early Sunday
morning, June 23, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following an illness of several months. Born in
Wadsworth, Ohio, October 8, 1913, he and the former Miss Zelda Horne were married July 16, 1938.
in Dalton, Ohio. Mr. Halliwill attended Miami University in Ohio and was a 1939 graduate of Cleveland
University. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenent in the U.S. Navy from October
1943 to February 1946, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. Coming to Gladwin County in
1946 to make his home, he opened the Halliwill Tax & Accounting Service in 1949.
Mr. Halliwill was a member of Gladwin St. Paul's Episcopal Church; past master of Gladwin Masonic
Lodge No. 397, F. & A.M.; past patron, White Clover Chapter No. 84, Order of Eastern Star; 32nd Degree
Mason and member of Bay City Consistory; Shriner and member of Elf Kburafeh Temple of Saginaw;
Vacationland Shrine Club; Scottish Rite Club of Clare and Gladwin Counties; National Society of Public
Accounting; past president and secretary Gladwin Development Corporation; Civil Air Patrol; Aircraft
Owners and Pilots Association; past president and secretary of Gladwin Rotary Club; Gladwin County Farm
Bureau; Michigan State Farm Bureau and past member of the board of directors; member and present secretary
of Hiawatha Sportsmens Club. An ardent sportsman, he was an airplane pilot and deer hunter, and an above
average bowler and golfer.
Surviving are his wife, Zelda; one brother, Harold of Medina, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. A
daughter, Diana, preceded him in death in October, 1944. Services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Mathews
Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Saulsbury officiating. Cremation was at Flint Memorial Park Crematorium,
Memorial services were held by the Gladwin Masonic Lodge Monday evening.
