Virgil S. Grout
OLD TIME RESIDENT OF GROUT TOWNSHIP
DIES AT ROSEBURG, OREGON

Virgil S. Grout passed away Tuesday night, May 8, at about midnight in the Old Soldiers' Home, at Roseburg, Ore. at the age of 89 years. He was a corporal in company K, 3rd Michigan Infantry, during the Civil war, and was admitted to the Soldiers' Home from Grant's Pass, Ore., in 1917. He is survived by his wife, Kate Grout, and by one brother, George C. Grout, of Vancouver, Wash. The funeral was held at Roseburg, with interment in the Soldiers Home cemetery.
Many of the old timers in Gladwin will remember him as the oldest son of the late Willard Grout, who was one of the first settlers, and the founder of the settlement which later became known as Grout township. The plat of the village of Cedar, now a part of the city of Gladwin, was platted by Mr. V. S. Grout, who in his time in Gladwin county was a leading citizen here, filling official positions and operating a sawmill in Grout township just south of the Grout homestead.
