Virgil S. Grout
OLD TIME RESIDENT OF GROUT TOWNSHIP DIES AT ROSEBURG, OREGON
Virgil S. Grout passed away Tuesday night, May 8,
at about midnight in the Old Soldiers' Home, at
Roseburg, Ore. at the age of 89 years. He was a
corporal in company K, 3rd Michigan Infantry, during
the Civil war, and was admitted to the Soldiers' Home
from Grant's Pass, Ore., in 1917. He is survived by
his wife, Kate Grout, and by one brother, George C.
Grout, of Vancouver, Wash. The funeral was held at
Roseburg, with interment in the Soldiers Home
cemetery.
Many of the old timers in Gladwin will remember him
as the oldest son of the late Willard Grout, who was
one of the first settlers, and the founder of the
settlement which later became known as Grout township.
The plat of the village of Cedar, now a part of the
city of Gladwin, was platted by Mr. V. S. Grout, who
in his time in Gladwin county was a leading citizen
here, filling official positions and operating a
sawmill in Grout township just south of the Grout
homestead.
