Gladwin County Obituary/Death Notice
Roberta Goings

   Roberta A. Goings, 88, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006 at Highlands Regional Hospital in Sebring, Florida.

   She was born June 1, 1918 in Hillsdale, the oldest of eight children. Roberta was born to Carl and Emma Gundrum.

   She attended the Normal College in Ypsilanti (now Eastern Michigan University) and earned her teaching certificate.

   On Aug. 24, 1940 she married Edmond Goings and he survives her.

   Roberta taught elementary and preschool in Ypsilanti, taking time off to raise her family. In 1963 she and her husband and two younger children went to Somalia, Africa for two years as part of a program from Eastern Michigan University that was establishing a teacher training school.

   She and her husband retired in 1976 and moved to Gladwin where they enjoyed many years in their home on Kerswill Lake. She liked taking walks, identifying birds and spending time with the friends they made on the lake. She also volunteered her time to help adults learn to read. In 1990 they moved to Sebring, Florida and for the past seven years have lived in a retirement community, The Palms of Sebring. She continued to stay active volunteering as librarian for the Palms, playing bridge and oil painting. She loved to read and play the organ.

   She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edmond; their children, David (Judy) of Ann Arbor, Janet Rummins (John) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, Donald (Lin) of Ann Arbor, and Nancy (George) of Milan; grandchildren Dawn Pratt, Christine (James) Fredrickson, Steven Rummins, Cory Goings, Michael Goings, Dylan Goings, Julia Goings; and great-grandchild, Caroline Pratt; a sister, Janice Baker; and a brother, Keith Gundrum of Sarasota, Florida; nieces and nephews and many friends.

   She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Palms of Sebring in Sebring, Florida.
