Jack Gerwin

   Jack C. Gerwin, Sr., 83, of Gladwin, beloved father, grandfather and Great grandfather, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 17, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late Harry F. and Emma W. (Beneke) Gerwin, Jack was born Aug. 29, 1921 in Oak Park, Illinois. He attended St. John’s Military Academy and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He later attended General Motors Institute.

   Jack married Virginia L. Carlson on June 16, 1944, with whom he celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage. She predeceased him Oct. 29, 2004.

   He was employed at Electro Motors in LaGrange, Illinois, a division of General Motors. Jack was instrumental in bringing safety to Saginaw Steering Gear when he transferred here in 1953 to the newly formed position of Safety Director, from which he retired in 1981. He served as the Safety Council President for the State of Michigan for several years. He was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church in Saginaw where he served several terms as president. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Saginaw, also serving as president of their congregation, and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Gladwin. He was an avid stamp collector and gardener and enjoyed tennis, golf and cards. He was a member of Sugar Springs Golf Club and had served as the first secretary for the Men’s Golf League. Jack and Virginia developed the memorial gardens at Sugar Springs for everyone with their two grandsons, Scott and Jacob Gerwin, in mind.

   Surviving are four sons and three daughters, Jack Gerwin, Jr. and his special friend Eleanor Medina, M.D., of Bloomfield Hills, Echo (David) Kabobel of Saginaw, Allen Gerwin and his special friend Kris Flora of Saginaw, Kirk (Kathleen) Gerwin of Midland, Wendy (Ralph) Zeitler, Paul (Lori) Gerwin, and Erica (David) Russell, all of Saginaw; 17 grandchildren and their spouses, Ebony, Richard, Jack III, Brooke, Cory, Ashley, Kelly, Lindsey, Heather, Andrea, Kirk E., Adam, Brandi, Jenny, Summer, Kayla and Zachary; and seven Great grandchildren, Haley, Brady, Natalie, Justin, Michael, Kallie and Sawyer. Jack was preceded in death by two grandsons, Scott and Jacob Gerwin.

   Funeral services will take place at noon on Thursday, April 21 at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Street in Saginaw. Pastor Robert Eggers will officiate. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where military services will be conducted by American Legion Post #439. Friends may call at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Road (between Shattuck and McCarty), where the family will be present on Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m., and at Peace Lutheran Church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Peace Lutheran Church, Our Savior Lutheran-Gladwin, or Sugar Springs Memorial Fund.
