Anita Freed
Anita C. Freed, 88, of Kalamazoo, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2005 at Kairos Dwelling.
Anita was born on March 24, 1917 in Auglaize County, Ohio, the daughter of John L. and Luella Haas (Vossler). She spent her childhood on the family farm in Ohio and moved to Gladwin in 1937, where she met her loving husband Bob, who passed away in 1996. Her brother, Franklin, also preceded her in death. Anita took great pride in her "boys," who survive her, Karl (Judy) of Kalamazoo, Ralph (Toni) of Kalamazoo, and Roger (Mary) of Lake City. She took special joy in her grandchildren, Emily Freed of Kalamazoo, and Brett Freed, who passed away in 2004. She often baked them cookies, including her famous Rolo Cookies, and at Christmas made her special Santa Claus cookies, just as she had done for "the boys." Anita loved quilting, crocheting and crafts. She pieced together 100 quilts for charities with Sit and Stitch at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church while living at Merrill Residence the past three years. She was renowned for her pies and proud of her from-scratch crusts. Anita was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Portage and was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Gladwin. She was a member of United Methodist Women. She is also survived by Susan L. Freed, her former daughter-inlaw; step-grandchildren, Renee and Joe Kirkbride, Sonya and David Warnock; and step-great- grandchildren, Amanda and Aiden Warnock, and Corey, Conner, and Casey Kirkbride; and numerous friends and cousins.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 7028 Oakland Drive. Visitation was from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue. Private interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Visiting Nurse Association Program or the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.
