David Sherman Fairchild
David Sherman Fairchild, former resident of
Beaverton died at his home at Charlevoix, July 8.
Comrade David Sherman Fairchild was born at Greenfield
Center, Huron county, Ohio, Jan. 8, 1844. He enlisted
in the Civil war, in Co. K., Thirty-eight, Ohio
Volunteer Infantry, Sept. 10, 1861, at the age of 17
years and 8 months, and was honorably discharged May
9, 1862, by reason of a surgeon's certificate of
disability. Prompted by patriotism and devotion to his
country he re-enlisted in 1863 and served his county
as a faithful soldier until the close of the war,
having given his services and offered his life to his
country for two years and eight months.
He was a member of athe Baxter G.A.R. post at
Lyons, Ohio, until 1884, and after coming to Gladwin
he joined Noble post G.A.R. There Comrade Fairchild
was a long sufferer from rheumatism caused by exposure
while in the service. He went with his family to
Charlevoix several years ago and made his home there
until July 8 when he answered the last roll call, at
the age of 72 years, six months. He was brought to
Beaverton for burial at his former home.
