Charles Henry Fairchild

CHARLES H. FAIRCHILD


  Charles H. Fairchild died at his home in Beaverton, Saturday, Feb. 2, aged 78 years. He had been in poor health for some time, but was confined to the house only three weeks. Charles Henry Fairchild, son of Sherman and Adeline Fairchild, was born in Huron county, Ohio, Feb. 22, 1846, and was married to Lois Allen Breckenridge in 1869. To this union were born four children, three of whom survive, Estella Kenyon of Midland, Thomas of Toledo and Walter of Cadillac. His first wife passed away in 1912 and he was married in 1914 to Alice E. Dann, who survives him, besides three brothers, Marshall of Mt. Vernon, O., and Ezra and Daniel of Beaverton, one sister, Alice of Adrian, Mich., and 11 grandchildren.

  Mr. Fairchild enlisted in Co. a 67 O.V.I at Etna, O., Oct. 11, 1861. He was promoted to duty sergeant and wounded at Winchester and Ft. Wagner. He was discharged at Hilton Head, S. C., and again enlisted at Toledo, Nov. 18, 1863, Batt, D, 2nd O H A., and was discharged at Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1865. He took a law course at Lansing, first pratice at Morenci, and was a member of the Gladwin county bar. He came to Gladwin county in 1897, settling on a farm at Dale, and 14 years ago took up his residence in Beaverton, where he resided up to his death.

  Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. J. Preston at the M. E. church and at the cemetery by the American Legion. Mr. Fairchild took a prominent part in public affairs, and his kindly genial disposition attracted to him many friends. In his death a useful citizen has passed away, one who will be greatly missed..
