Lawrence W. Elson

(17 JAN 1916 - 23 MAY 1997)

   Lawrence W. Elson, 81, of Youngstown, Ariz., formerly of Midland, died May 23, 1997, at Boswell Memorial Hospital, Sun City, Ariz., after a long illness. Lawrence was born Jan. 17, 1916, in Lockwood Mo. He had lived in Arizona since 1969. He married the former Edna J. (Heckerthorn) Clore on March 19, 1947, in Midland. She predeceased him May 4, 1984. At the time of Mrs. Edna Elson's death, she was buried in the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. She has been disinterred and returned to Gladwin to be reburied next to her husband in the McClure Cemetery.

   He was employed by The Dow Chemical Co. as a boilermaker. He retired in 1969 after 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the 748th Ordinance Co. 84th Division. Lawrence participated in the Battles of the Bulge, Rhine & Rhur. Lawrence is a life member of the V.F.W. Post No. 1433 in Glendale, Ariz. He was a member of the Berryhill Post, American Legion in Midland.

   He is survived by his stepson, Jerry Clore of Gladwin; six grandchildren; his sister, Viola and William Kotcher of Saginaw; his brothers, Robert and Lois Elson of Weiser, Idaho and William and Edith Elson of Boise, Idaho; and his sister-in-law, Pearl Elson of New Plymouth, Idaho. He was preceded in death by stepdaughter Delores Babcock; and brothers Lloy Elson and Alvin Elson.

   Funeral services will be Friday, June 13, 1997, 11 a.m. at graveside. V.F.W. will officiate with burial in McClure Cemetery, Gladwin. Arrangements are handled by Hall Funeral Home, 440 E. Cedar Ave., Gladwin, MI 48624.
