Catherine Elliott
Catherine G. "Cathy" Elliott, 78, of Hope, loving wife of Rev. William T. Elliott, died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 7, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family after a three year struggle with terminal cancer.
She was born on Nov. 9, 1927 in Midland, daughter of the late Thomas Griswold, Jr. and Vera Ann (Hadsell) Griswold.
Cathy attended Albion College and Ohio Wesleyan. She had worked as a dental assistant from 1948 to 1950, and had worked in the dental caries research lab at the University of Michigan from 1950 to 1952.
The former Catherine Ann Griswold married James Parley Smith, DDS on Aug. 25, 1947 in Midland. He preceded her in death in 1961. She then married William T. Elliott on Sept. 19, 1981 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Midland.
Cathy had served as the church organist for 22 years, was a devoted wife and mother, was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing the guitar, was a lifelong bird watcher, was very active in church activities at St. John’s Episcopal Church where her husband was the minister, and had been an award-winning watercolor artist.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. William T. Elliott of Hope; children, Laurel Smith Tudor of Higgins Lake, Valerie Jean Smith and husband James Dobben of Hope; step daughter, Beth Elliott Karns and partner Doug Fulkerson of Traverse City; step son, Robert Tate Elliott; grandchildren, Ashley Karns of Traverse City, Stefanie Tudor and Emily Tudor, both of Cincinnati; brother, Grant H. (Jo) Griswold of Raphine, Virginia. In addition to her parents, Cathy was predeceased by one brother, Nelson D. Griswold; and two sisters, Josephine Ashmun and Leila R. Edick.
Funeral services took place Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Rev. Mary Jo Schuetz and The Right Rev. Todd Ousley officiated. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider MidMichigan Hospice, Visiting Nurse Association or the Higgins Lake Foundation.
