DEATH OF JAMES G. DOW
Died in Billings, Gladwin county, Mich., Saturday, May 21, 1881, at 1:15 p.m., James G. Dow, aged 38 years, 4 months and 24
days.
The death of Mr. Dow had been expected for some time past, he having been an intense sufferer from phthisis, or chronic
consumption at times, for the past three years, and had been confined to his bed a great portion of the time. Death cam at
length, however, and he passed quietly to his long rest on Saturday last. The funeral was held Monday morning at the late
residence of the deceased in Billings, and was quite largely attended. The services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Aliman, M.E.
minister of Hope, Midland county, who preached an affective discourse from Matt. xxv-18, "Watch therefor; for ye know not at
what hour the Son of man cometh." The remains of the deceased were interred in the cemetery at Edenville. The following acted
as pallbearers: S. D. Lyncs, O.W. Robinson, Thos. Moore, S.C. Williams, Norris Gill, D. L. Ketcham and Edward Blaney.
James G. Dow, the subject of this short sketch, was born in Ireland, from whence he emigrated to Lewis county, N.Y., when
quite young, and came to Michigan about 15 years ago, since which time he has resided in Billings. He was married in April,
1870, to Miss Julia F. Harris of Edenville, Midland county, and his wife three children remain to mourn the loss of a loved
one. Mr. Dow held the office of supervisor of Billings township from the organization of the county up to the last election,
and has consequently been prominently identified with the early history of our county. We know of his belonging in no social
organization, except the I.O.O.F., Midland lodge.
Mr. Dow was a man of generous disposition, warm hearted and hospitable, a kind husband and indulgent father, and leaves hosts
of friends to mourn his loss, who also extend their sympathy to the bereaved family in their deep affliction.
