Dorothy Courneya
Dorothy L. Courneya, 84, of Gladwin, left the confines of this world on Monday, Jan. 9, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Dehlia Fanslow and was born in Clare County on June 10, 1921. She moved with her family to Cleveland, Ohio for a few years and then returned to Gladwin County where she had lived since that time. Dorothy married Ernest Courneya, Jr. on Aug. 13, 1942 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dorothy and Ernie enjoyed 56 years of marriage before his death in June 1998.
Dorothy worked in the family grocery store and was an accomplished bookkeeper for several area businesses. She served as deputy county clerk of Gladwin County for many years. She loved to write poetry and was famous for her poems, which she often crafted during her many hours of clerking the courts. Dorothy was a talented painter and craftsperson and during these last few years was active in the Gladwin Historical Society. Surviving are her daughter, Karen Courneya of Saginaw; her son, Robert (Sharon) Courneya of Grand Blanc; her grandchildren, Adam (Amanda) and Sarah; a Great granddaughter, Hallie; her brother, Larry (Joyce) Fanslow; her brother-in-law and sisterin- law, Donald and Annie Courneya; and special friends Betty and Herman Wright and Greg and Linda Schneider. She was predeceased by her sister, Rosalie.

Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin. In lieu of flowers for those planning an expression of sympathy, please consider memorials to the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10293 E. M- 61, Gladwin and Saginaw County Commission on Aging, 2355 Schust, Saginaw.
