George Coon
GEORGE COON, 48 DIES SUDDENLY
George R. Coon, 48, of Gladwin, died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday, July 23, while
picking blueberries in Denton Township, Roscommon County. Born at Houghton Lake on Feb. 17,
1922, he had lived in Gladwin County since 1946. Mr. Coon was employed by the Dow Chemical Co.
He was a member of the Skeels Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. He served with the
U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific. He was married to the former Dorothy Hayward on Feb. 23,
1946, in Flint.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, George, at home; two daughters, Sherry Ann and
Mary Lu, at home; his mother, Mrs. Ada Coon, of Houghton Lake; and three sisters, Mrs. Marjorie
Markham, of Deer Isle, Me., Mrs. Grace Bielby, of Lansing and Mrs. Vera Szylagyi, of Flint. Rites
were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Skeels Baptist Church. The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and
burial was in the Highland Cemetery. The Miner-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
