James Sylvester Conner
WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF BUCKEYE CALLDE SUDDENLY TO LONG HOME
The death of James Sylvester Conner took place
suddenly at his home in Buckey, May 18, 1910. Mr.
Conner had attended to his usual labors during the
day, and lived only a few hours after supper, being
taken ill with heart trouble. Mr. Conner was born near
Pough-keepsie, N. Y., May 17, 1845, and at the time of
his death was aged 65 years and 1 day. When about 8
years of age he came with his parents to Michigan,
living in Genesee and Ingham counties until August,
1863, when he enlisted in the Civil war as private in
Co. G., 27th Michigan infantry, and served until the
close of the war, being present at the surrender of
Lee. He was confined as a prisoner of war six months
in Libby prison.
He was united in marriage Dec. 19, 1865, with Olive
Stid of Vevay township, Ingham county. After residing
there for a time they move to Clare county, where he
took a homestead in Frost township in 1878. They
resided there 10 years, then removed to Lawrence
county, Tenn. In 1903 he returned to Michigan and
settled in Buckeye township, Gladwin county, where he
resided until the time of his death. His wife, three
sons and five grandchildren survive him. Following are
the son: George of Oklahoma, Edward of Mason and Ray
at home. Mrs. Mary Howe, a granddaughter, of Eden they
reared from infancy.
Mr. Connor was held in high esteem. He was a member
of the G.A.R., and members of the order acted as
pallbearers. Rev. William Rumley officiated at the
funeral held Saturday. Interment in Highland cemetery.
