Leland Carman
Leland G. Carman, 75, of 1509 Chappel Dam Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Tuesday,
Sept. 16, in Salem, S.D. Born in Toledo, Ohio, March 21, 1911, he came to Gladwin County in 1968,
from Saginaw. Mr. Carman was a machinist for Saginaw Steering Geer and a veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Gladwin Co. VFW Post 7303, the DAV, Michigan Veterans Trust Fund, American
Legion Post 171, the UAW and past Noble Grand of the Gladwin IOOF Lodge 177. Mr. Carman and the
former Gladys Butler Durfee were married Aug. 27, 1957, in Saginaw County.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Charles of Gladwin; 2 daughters, Eunice Smith of
Beaverton and Juanita Podoba of St. Charles; 6 step-children, Dorothy Shuart and Samuel of Midland,
Robert of Mio, the Rev. James of Luxerene, Delbert of Yulee, Fla. and William of Pt. Blank, Texas; 37
grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. A daughter, Patricia Farrison, preceded him in death in
October 1968.
Services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. David Avery
officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery. Graveside rites were held by the VFW Post. The
American Legion held a service at 7 p.m Friday and the IOOF held one at 8 p.m.
