George Capper
OLD SOLDIER GONE TO LAST BIVOUAC
--- GEORGE CAPPER DIES AT HOME OF SON IN BUTMAN
--- BODY WILL BE TAKEN TO OHIO TO BE LAID BESIDE THAT OF HIS WIFE
CAPPER---George Capper died at the home of his son,
Hollis Capper, in Sherman township, Sept. 28, aged 86
years, one month and 28 days. Mr. Capper had lived in
11 states, and came to Gladwin county 13 years ago. He
had a large circle of friends, by wom he was highly
esteemed. Mr. Capper was born in Steuben county,
Virginia, July 31, 1829, Oct. 27, 1854, he was married
in Indiana to Harriet Boor, who departed this life
Jan. 11, 1896, in Defiance, O., and the greater
portion o fthe time since then he has made his home
iwth his adopted son, Hollis, where he had the best of
care.
To the union was born five daughters, of whom four
are living, viz: Mrs. Lurch of Toledo, Mrs. Calla
Brown of Paulding county, O., Mrs. Amanda Young of
Toledo, Mrs. Ella Vaughan of Defiance, O. He was also
one of a family of 11 brothers and three sisters, of
whom one brother and one sister are living. He was one
of seven brothers to serve in the Civil war. After the
war he was occupied in farming until his declining
years. Mr. Capper was a life long and ardent
Republican, always taking an active part in political
affairs, and voting at every presidential election
from the time that he became a voter, except the last.
Previous to his removal to Gladwin county he had
been a member of the United Brethren church, but on
the organization of the Free Methodist church in
Sherman, near his home, he became a supporter of that
organization, of which he was a member the last eight
years. He had remarkable endurance for a man of his
age. During the last five months, however, he became
very feeble, and suffered much, but all without a
murmer or word of complaint.
The funeral will take place today (Thursday) at the
Free Methodist church, Sherman, Rev. James Hygema
officiating. The body will be taken to Defiance, O.,
for interment beside his late companion.
