Kenneth Burgess
Kenneth L. Burgess, 71, of Midland, died at the MidMichigan Medical Center,
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002. Born Sept. 21, 1930 in Beaverton, he was the son of the late Ransom W.
and Loa Ellen (Ogg) Burgess. He was raised and educated in Beaverton and graduated from Beaverton
High School in 1947. Ken graduated from Alma College in 1952 with a BS degree, and received his MS
degree in 1954 from the University of Michigan. He then received his Ph.D from the University of
Michgian in 1957. He married the former Jane McKimmy, Dec. 28, 1950 in Beaverton. He worked for The
Dow Chemical Company as the assistant director of Legislative Affairs for Health, Environment and
Science from 1957 until retiring in 1990.
He was a member of Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, former member and past president
of the American Chemical Society and a member of the Plastics Engineers. He was an active supporter of
Free Masonry and was a life member of Midland Centre Lodge #273 F.&A.M., member of DeMolay Legion of
honor, Scottish Rite Masonry Valley of Bay City where he served as commander and chief and was awarded
the sublime degree of 33º for meritorious service, Knights Templar #26, Royal Arch Masons #169 serving
as past high priest, Red Cross of Constantine St. Martin Conclave, Pythagares Council, Elf Khurafeh
Shrine Temple and a life member of the Midland O.E.S. chapter #121.
Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Robert W. and wife Dawn of Bar Harbor,
Maine; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann and husband Jason G. Schuette of Mansfield, Texas; one brother, James
R. and wife Bonnie of Beaverton; one sister, Ada Ruth Frick of Beaverton; and grandchildren, Ransom and
Alden Burgess and Matthew and Michael Schuette. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Ellen
Burgess in 1967.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wilson Miller Funeral Home with the Rev.
David Young, pastor of Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church, officiating. A Masonic memorial service was
conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to Centre Lodge #273 for Masonic Charities or to
Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church building fund.
