Melvin Brown

   Melvin Leo Brown of Gladwin, 77, passed away at his home on Friday, July 21, 2006.

   He was born in Detroit on March 17, 1929 and moved to Gladwin with his parents as a young child. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

   He was a long time member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Gladwin. Melvin was a multi-talented man who had several careers throughout his life, among them are home construction, Gladwin County deputy sheriff and a skilled tradesman in the plastics industry for Brown Machine, where he retired from after 27 years.

   Melvin was a talented musician who played by ear, and at one time played in a popular local band. During his tour of duty in the Korean War, in addition to his job as a mechanic, he was called upon to entertain at an Officer’s Club. He participated in an on air radio talent contest and came very close to winning a trip to Nashville to play music. He played the accordion, concertina, fiddle and guitar. In spite of limited formal education, Melvin was a very intelligent and well read man who was very entertaining storyteller.

   He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol Jean (Reid) Brown; two sons, Douglas Melvin (Renee) Brown of Mt. Pleasant, and Jeffrey Scott Brown of Gladwin; a halfbrother George (Evelyn) Pickard of Gladwin; four brothers, Eugene (Erica) Brown of Gladwin, Leroy (Joanne) Brown of Beaverton, Louellen Brown of Flint, Theodore (Eunice) Brown of Coleman; and brother-in-law Randy Stone of Gladwin. He was predeceased by his father, Leo Brown, and his mother, Ella Zirbel Pickard Brown and one half-brother, Richard Pickard.

   Melvin was well liked throughout the community and will be missed by many. Melvin’s request, there will no funeral. His remains will be cremated and quietly interred. Sisson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
