William Behnke
William J. Behnke, 85, of 215 E. Maple St., Gladwin, died Saturday, Aug. 1, in
the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Princeton, Minn., on January 7, 1896, he moved ot Long Beach,
Calif., as a young boy and to Gladwin County in 1911. He settled in Secord Township and then in
the north end of Gladwin where he worked in a sawmill operated by his father. He then established
Behnke's Automotive Repair in the early 1920's which he operated until 1932, when he retired due
to ill health. In later years he established Bill's Wholesale Iron which he operated until his death.
Mr. Behnke and the former Sophia Lang were married June 5, 1915, in Clare. She preceded him in death
on February 28, 1974. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Stuart (Helen) Merriell of Mt. Pleasant and Mrs.
Paul (Kay) Hysell of Gladwin; 2 sons, Lawrence of Swartz Creek and Carl of Ft. Meade, Fla.; 4 brothers,
Edwin of Duran, Henry, August and Clarence of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ella Hall of Lennon and Mrs.
Milly Keyworth of Michigan City, Ind.; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Services were held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Lindberg
officiated and burial was in the Highland Cemetery.
